Friday Rams Report
Jim Thomas joined The Roll Home on Team 1380 Friday afternoon with the latest news on the Rams as they prepare for their second preseason game Saturday night.
With Steven Jackson’s holdout being the hot topic around town, Thomas reported that nothing new has changed. Rams president Jay Zygmunt has not been seen around the team the past few days, and Thomas suspects that he could be talking with Eugene Parker, Jackson’s agent. Jackson has been fined a total of $330,000 so far.
With tomorrow night’s game against the Chargers coming up, Thomas said that the veterans on the team have acknowledged their need to play better. Quarterback Marc Bulger and the rest of the vets that are suited up will play most of the first half. Noting Bulger’s struggles last game, Thomas said that Bulger needs to settle in a little bit during the actual game time. He also said he’d like to see Bulger do some more quick-pass plays to get his confidence going.
Offensive lineman Orlando Pace is also expected to play into the second quarter, and Thomas noted that Pace has been practicing a little more since former Rams coach Dick Vermiel told him to when he visited Rams camp. Pace has expressed that, despite not taking any part in any one-on-one pass-rush drills during practices, most of his preparation is mental at this point.
Looking in detail into tomorrow night’s game, Thomas talked about what to watch for, including the run defense, better tackling and the first offensive unit scoring a touchdown. Specifically with players, Thomas in interested in watching Pace, the Rams backup quarterbacks, and rookie defensive end Chris Long. “He just needs to relax and be himself,” Thomas said.

Memphis Redbirds Update
Memphis Redbirds broadcaster Steve Selby joined Joe Zydlo on The Batting Cage on Team 1380 Thursday evening.
Steve said that Jess Todd pitched well in his first start at Triple-A, but he doesn’t look at the line, he just looks
at how the kid attacks hitters,
which Jess did a great job of.
Steve mentioned that the Round Rock batters said they had a tough time picking up the ball out of Todd’s hand.
Jason Motte looked really good against Round Rock, and Steve said he pitched a “Major League inning for the first time all year.”
Adam Wainwright looked better in his second outing, and according to Steve, his fastball had more life and command and was beginning to run away from the hitters a bit. Selby also mentioned Wainwright’s breaking ball has been good since he started rehab.
Blake Hawksworth finally got the monkey off his back by finally winning a game with Memphis.
P.J. Walters was discussed and Steve says he walks too many batters and will need to bring that down if he hopes to get to the majors, but he has pitched well.

Jackson Looking for New Agent?
National football writer Howard Balzer has reported that Steven Jackson may be looking for a new agent because he isn't happy that his current agent hasn't been able to get anywhere with the Rams.
The Rams have had two full weeks of training camp now without Jackson, and there have been no conversations between the Rams and Jackson’s agent, Eugene Parker, since camp opened July 25.
There is a five day waiting period before Jackson would be able to hire a new agent if he decides to fire Parker, which would push potential negotiations back till at least next Wednesday.
The Rams have remained firm that they will not negotiate any contracts unless Jackson is in camp, and there is speculation that the two sides are not far apart. There are reports that Jackson is looking for around $20 million guaranteed, and the Rams are a few million under that.
Jackson is on either his third or fourth agent in four years. Jackson didn't hire Parker till this past June after former agent Gary Uberstine dropped him as a client in the spring. Rocky Arceneaux was Jackson’s first agent after he was drafted, and it is believed he hired Lamont Smith/Peter Schaeffer for a brief time.

Post-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Thursday afternoon in the middle of the second practice. Jim watched the defense practice more today, and everything was a lot calmer with no fights so far.
Chris Long uses his hands, and you can see the polish, but he is still learning the defense. He has been going up against Brandon Torrey and Mike Otto. He’s had a couple good pass rushes against the one guy and has been shut down by the other. The coaches are treating him like any other rookie and they are yelling in his ear the whole time. Long had Vince Young running for his life at one point, which led to a bad throw and interception.

Joe said that Chris Perez got a call last night around 2am when he was in Sacramento with the Memphis Redbirds to get here today.
The bullpen is really shot today so it seems that Perez will get a chance here to close if for nothing else to hold the fort till Wainwright would be ready.
Joe heard that Perez has been pitching better recently, and there isn’t a better time than now to have him close, but it comes down to Tony giving him the ball. Joe thinks Perez being called up was because of last night even though the club is trying to spin it otherwise.

(Updated---The Rams made a contract offer to Steven Jackson late last night, and it was rejected this afternoon by his agent Eugene Parker. Jackson will be fined $15,000 each day he is absent. Parker also represents Devin Hester who is trying to get a new contract from the Bears.)
Post-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Friday afternoon live from Rams Camp.
Jim said there is no sign of Steven Jackson yet. Steven’s agent Eugene Parker and Rams officials were talking as late as 9:30/10pm last night. Thomas thinks that Rams fans shouldn’t worry about it unless he doesn’t show up over the weekend.
If you have a contract you should be in camp, but Jim said he can see the players’ point of view because teams can cut players when they don’t want them anymore.
Jackson not showing up on time is also a downer for the organization because he is the cover boy for their marketing campaign.
