Izzy No Longer Closer

izzyAccording to STLToday.com, Tony LaRussa said today that Jason Isringhausen, who blew his fifth save Friday night, will no longer close games.

LaRussa said that Ryan Franklin and Russ Springer will split the closer role, but he would also use a left-hander in certain situations.

"We'll mix and match," La Russa said. "I think all things, everyone rested, Franklin and
Springer are the guys that match up the best."

Isringhausen says he's tired of embarassing himself.

Isringhausen says he needs time off to re-group.

Edmonds Released by Padres

edmondsAccording to 1050 radio in San Diego, Jim Edmonds
has been released by the San Diego Padres after 26 games.

Edmonds, who turns 38 on June 27, will become a free agent after he clears release waivers sometime next week, and he wants to keep playing according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Jim started the season on the disabled list with a right calf strain, and he just never got going for the Padres, who have lost 17 of the last 21 games. He hit one home run in 90 at-bats, and his batting average/on-base/slugging line was .178/.265/.233.

Whitey Herzog Talks Cards

herzogFormer Cardinals Manager and GM Whity Herzog joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Thursday afternoon.

So far the Cardinals have been wonderful with everyone hitting, and when everyone hits, you win. The pitching staff has been a pleasant surprise. The guy who has impressed Herzog the most is Ron Villone.

Whitey thinks Isringhausen will bounce back, and he needs to use the curveball more. He said he thinks Izzy falls in love with his cutter, and if you make a mistake with the cutter it is a pretty good pitch to hit.

Herzog said that the Cardinals have also been lucky because they haven't faced the number one starter for Milwaukee, Chicago, Cincinnati, or Colorado when they played those teams in their past few series.

Whitey thinks Ted Simmons could be a successful manager, but doesn't think Ned Yost should be fired any time soon because the Brewers haven't been hitting.

Herzog said he has known Rick Ankiel for a long time, and he remembers watching the first game he pitched and he kept the ticket stub to give to his grandson because he thought Rick would be in the Hall of Fame. He was impressed with his throws the other night and said that Rick is just a fun player to watch play; the ball just jumps off his bat.

Whitey said there is no way he would sign Barry Bonds if he was a NL team, but he thinks Bonds can still hit and contribute as a DH. However, Herzog said that Barry has a lot of baggage, and he would have to be treated just like all the other guys on the roster.

The guys also talked about how teams have been using young players coming up through their systems compared to the money teams who go after free agents.

Whitey talked about teams going into Latin America to recruit players, and he talked about the Florida Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Herzog doesn't think the Yankees can win because of their poor starting pitching. He thinks the Detroit Tigers will be in the hunt at the end of the season, but they haven't gotten much out of their pitching staff either.

Whitey said the Cubs are the best team in the central, but that doesn't mean they will win it. He said he thinks Carlos Marmol probably has the best young arm coming out of the bullpen in the National League. Derrick Lee is right up next to Pujols as the best player in the league. He said Alfonzo Soriano would swing at the Moon if you threw it up there.

Edmonds on Way Out?

edmondsAccording to San Diego Union-Tribune's Tim Sullivan, the Padres are about to eat Jim Edmond's contract.

Tim wrote: "You have to know you've overstayed your welcome when Callix Crabbe is sent up to pinch hit in your place in the ninth inning. You have to know the end is near when your general manager goes on the radio to remark on how much your legs and bat have slowed down."

Edmonds is still due $4.75 million of his $8 million 2008 salary, which is a substantial amount to pay someone after he is cut. However, with the way he is playing, Sullivan thinks it would be better for the team to cut him to keep the fans interested in the team.

Edmonds will be 38 years old next month, has a .180 batting average, and has been sluggish in the field this season.

Jim Hayes Previews Cards

FSN

Fox Sports Midwest's Jim Hayes joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Wednesday afternoon live from Colorado before the Cardinals' game.

Jim said that Ryan Ludwick getting on base 5 times last night was overshadowed by Rick Ankiel's unbelievable plays. He said that the look on the players' faces was one of disbelief because of how incredible the plays were.

The team is very complete, and you never know who is going to be the star of the game and where the production will come from. Tony LaRussa said that he would like to get Brendan Ryan in the game more, but it's hard to take anyone out of the lineup with the way they are playing.

LaRussa said that Albert Pujols' leg is "barking a little" and bruised from hard slides. Tony is considering resting Albert tomorrow for the afternoon game. LaRussa said he is going to see how Pujols feels tonight after the game, and that Albert is honest with him, but Tony is leaning towards resting him.

The team chemistry is a lot better this year than in the past. The players say that a lot of them came up together through the minors and played together so they feel some unity. Also the guys said that competing with each other for at-bats is creating a great atmosphere.

Adam Wainwright has become the ace of the staff, and it seems like everytime he pitches the cards win.

MULDER OFF REHAB ASSIGNMENT

PITCHER DIAGNOSED WITH MILD ROTATOR CUFF STRAIN

mulder

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have taken pitcher Mark Mulder off of his injury rehabilitation assignment after he was diagnosed with a mild rotator cuff strain of his left shoulder. Mulder was evaluated this morning in St. Louis by team physician Dr. George Paletta.

The team plans to rest Mulder for the next 7-10 days and then he will be re-evaluated. Mulder made four starts during his rehab assignment, the most recent coming this past Monday (May 5) for Triple-A Memphis.

Left-hander Jeff Francis is 0-3 with a 5.26 ERA this season, but is 4-and-1 with a 2.28 ERA in six starts against the Cards.  Aaron Miles is 4-for-10 against Francis, while Troy
Glaus has two home runs in twelve at bats against him.

VP of Player Procurement Jeff Luhnow Discusses Cardinals Minor League System

Vice President of Player Procurement Jeff Luhnow joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker Tuesday afternoon from Venezuela where he is recruiting players. He had lunch with the family of a 16 year-old prospect who is looking for a fit for their son. Their main question is if their child is going to be taken care of. Jeff said they will fargo a higher offer if there is a better fit for their child.

parisiLuhnow is excited about having quality players at AAA-Memphis this year such as Mike Parisi, who was just called up and pitched great last night. Parisi was taken in the 9th round, and is the first player from that draft to make it to the big leagues. Jeff said it's great to not have to look outside of the organization and to move someone up from the level below.

"In the past if we had a spot to fill, we usually had to comb the wire and didn't necessarily have anyone to bring up," he said.

Luhnow said he thinks Chris Perez, Mark Worrell, and Chris Motte are all capable of contributing to the big league roster if needed.

"If there is a need I don't think I would hesitate to tell the guys in St. Louis that they are ready," he said. "All three are a phone call away from the big leagues."

Peter Kozma is a little ahead of where Jeff thought he would be at this time. He showed in spring training that he was ready for A-ball, and he has impressed the coaches with both his bat and defense. He has also become a team leader.

Adam Ottavino had some soreness in his arm and hadn't pitched well in his last few outings so he was put on the 7-day DL. Jeff said he isn't too concerned about it. Adam has hit a few milestones already and he should make his next start. Jeff thinks he will be a major league pitcher, but is just going through some bumps in the road.

rasmuxLuhnow was in Memphis a couple weeks ago and said that Colby Rasmus is going through something he will have to go through at each level. At triple-A the pitchers recognize that Colby is the top prospect, and he just isn't getting pitches to hit. Jeff is confident that he will figure it out and come back strong.

Jeff said that David Freese's biggest asset is his bat, but he has played well defensively so far in Memphis this year. He thinks that he will be at least an average defensive third baseman.

Jeff Todd was named pitcher of the year and was just promoted to double-A, and will start tomorrow.

Steven Hill had a tremendous first year, and is continuing it this year hitting the ball well in a pitchers' league. He has pretty much mastered A-ball a little over a year out from being drafted.

Rams' draft pick Chris Long's brother is a collegiate pitcher who may be a first round draft pick this year, and Jeff said they are looking at him. Kyle Long who is a 6'7" lefthander, is a good looking pitcher, and we have interest in him. It will come down to where he is drafted and if he thinks his offer is enough to take him away from school.

The guys also talked about other prospects including Tyler Green, and they talked more in detail about scouting Latin American players.

scherzerMax Scherzer Talks about Making it to Big Leagues

Mizzou grad and new Diamondbacks starter Max Scherzer joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Thursday.

Max said that he wasn't overwhelmed by making it to the big leagues when he entered the game Tuesday, but the first day he was up with the Diamondbacks he was a little flustered.

"When I was warming up, I was already locked in," Max said. He joked that "thank God (the first hitter he faced) was a pitcher."

Max said that the Diamondbacks have a good mix of both young guys and veterans in the clubhouse which keeps it loose. He said all the young guys are pulling for each other in the majors.

Scherzer said he watches anything that Randy Johnson or anyone else in the rotation does, and he tries to learn from them.

Max said his parents and 10-15 family members will be in attendance for his first start Monday.

Cards Updates from John Mozeliak

mozeliakCardinals GM John Mozeliak joined Bernie Miklasz and Joe Strauss on the Roll Home on Team 1380 Thursday afternoon.

John said he was very optimistic about the team from early on. He really believed in giving Skip Schumaker and Ryan Ludwick an opportunity to play.

Mozeliak said that Mark Mulder hasn't hit his spots and there is no sugar coating that. John is going to sit down with Mark and figure it out. If they have to wait a couple weeks it's no big deal because of how the other Cards' pitchers are playing. After 30 days, Mulder will have to be brought up or the only other option is to send him back to the DL and extended spring training.

John said Chris Carpenter looked good, has felt good, and has started to face hitters.

Matt Clement's progress is "like a yo-yo," he seems to improve and then take a step back. There is no reason to rush him back, but he's going to have to show improvement.

Mozeliak gave a minor league report on AAA-Memphis, and said he is happy Brian Anderson got called up. John said that he absolutely thinks that at some point Brian Anderson may be able to back up Yadier Molina at the big league level.

Dusty Baker Previews Reds

bakerReds Manager Dusty Baker joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on the Roll Home on Team 1380 Tuesday afternoon.

Dusty said it will be great working with Walt Jocketty because he's known him for a long time. It was uncomfortable for him because he is grateful to Wayne Krivsky for hiring him, but the owner had to do what was best for the organization.

Baker said that he thinks this will be a great race in the Central so don't count the Reds out.

Dusty said Tony LaRussa is like his brother and he has nothing but respect for Tony. He said that when LaRussa and himself had their differences a few years ago, it was like two brothers fighting and that you have to move on.

Dusty said a lack of hitting is contagious so they are happy they got hot in San Francisco and are coming off a 3 game winning streak. If you can get some guys hot in the middle that can carry you till other guys heat up.

Baker said the young guys give the veterans energy, and Dusty likes the combination of using both in his lineup.

Roy Oswalt a Cardinal?

straussCardinals beat writer Joe Strauss joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on the Roll Home on Friday.

Roy Oswalt said he would forgo his no trade clause if he were traded to Atlanta, Boston, or St. Louis. However, Strauss said he doesn't know how much money the Cardinals would have to extend his contract since they already have Mark Mulder, Chris Carpenter, and Adam Wainwright with big contracts.

Joe said he looks at Troy Glaus as a half full situation, and he thinks he will get his first home run on this homestand.

Strauss thinks the biggest need on the Cards that has to be addressed this July or in the offseason will be a clean-up hitter.

Rick Ankiel is an aggressive streaky hitter and will burn teams when he his hot, but he when he's cold he could hurt the lineup.

The guys also talk about the relationship between Walt Jocketty and John Mozeliak; Adam Kennedy's play so far; Tony LaRussa's managing; Skip Schumaker; and other topics.

McLaughlin Talks Ball from Pittsburgh

mclaughlinFSN Cardinals Broadcaster Dan McLaughlin joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on the Roll Home on Team 1380 Wednesday.

The guys agreed this could be a trap series with 2 games against Pittsburgh's top starters. However, the Cards are 41-17 against the Pirates in PNC Park.

Dan said Brendan Ryan should give the Cards production out of the 9 spot in the lineup when he gets in at shortstop. You lose some defense by having Ryan in over Izturis, but you gain offense.

The guys talked about the bullpen being tired, with Kyle McClellan, and Ryan Franklin unavailable tonight.

They also said they would like to see Rick Ankiel hit in the 2 spot and Chris Duncan at clean-up.

Joe Strauss' Notes from Milwaukee

straussPost Dispatch Cardinals writer Joe Strauss said that both the Phillies and Braves are interested in Anthony Reyes and Brad Thompson, respectively, and the Cardinals had a scout looking at prospects from different teams this past weekend.

You aren't going to get a lot of return value right now, which is why a trade might not happen. Joe said he thinks a high end prospect would likely be what the Cardinals would get in a deal.

Looper might be more likely to be dealt by the Cardinals, but no team is looking to take on that much salary at this point.

Brendan Ryan could be brought up before the end of the road trip, but Tony LaRussa was downplaying his hitting in his rehab in the minors.

The guys also talked about Adam Wainwright pitching again under pressure with limited bullpen availability tonight. Strauss said the whole road trip will be impacted by how long Wainwright can go tonight because Ron Villone, Anthony Reyes, and Brad Thompson are not available.

Hal McRae thinks Troy is close to turning it around. Joe said Glaus has no home runs in 60+ at bats, and he has to improve for this lineup to flow.

Cardinals Notes from Strauss

straussCardinals insider Joe Strauss joined Bernie Miklasz, Randy Karraker, and Martin Kilcoyne Friday afternoon on Team 1380. The guys discussed Troy Glaus' struggles, and Joe thinks it is too early to start putting him down. Strauss said he has been surprised with how he has handled the media and his teammates.

They talked about the clean-up spot in the lineup and mentioned Ludwick as someone who could fill that need. Joe believes it wouldn’t be a bad idea to push down Troy Glaus to the sixth spot, because he believes the person in that spot is more important than most spots in the lineup.

They then talked about how Tony LaRussa likes to be flexible with the lineup and how Duncan is also good fit at clean-up with the way he takes good at bats.

Joe Strauss to Part 1

PART 2

Strauss said that Dave Duncan is still intrigued by Todd Wellemeyer, and the guys talked about the possible trade market for both Brad Thompson and Anthony Reyes. Scouts from both Minnesota and Philadelphia were at Busch Stadium yesterday.

Joe said that Mark Mulder will likely make 3 more starts in the minors and come up around May 10. However, he said that you have to be careful trying to project when he will be back because once he's on the roster again he can't be off again unless he's on the DL.

The guys said they think Brendan Ryan will be back sooner than later because of the play of Rico Washington and the need of versatility in the infield.

Other topics of discussion were Ben Sheets not pitching against the Cards, Reyes' velocity, and Pineiro's comeback.

Bill James Talks Baseball

jamesRenowned baseball guru Bill James joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on the Roll Home on Team 1380 to talk about his website, new book, and all the things baseball.

Bill said he can’t rank Albert Pujols historically, because he is still a moving target, but believes Alex Rodriguez has never been the best in the Majors---with Barry Bonds holding that spot from 2000 to 2005 and Pujols taking over then. He said what makes Pujols the best is the fact that he is so into the game and adjusts so quickly to everything.

James talked briefly about the Cardinals being a successful organization and the youth transition has not been as easy as it has been for other teams.

The boys also talked about Ted Simmons and agreed that he should be in the Hall of Fame. He believes the HOF voters should do a better job on accessing players.

James thinks human judgement is a lot better way to figure out who should be in the Hall of Fame than having statistical numbers to reach because if the standards were developed in 1950 you would might end up with no relievers in the HOF, and with obviously batters now have much more inflated numbers than in the past.

Bill talked about the Cardinals 2004 bullpen being the best bullpen in history, behind Isringhausen’s 46 saves.

Bill talked about his career and the way others view it and said he can’t really comment on what others think. But he said it’s frustrating that others believe all he cares about is the numbers because he knows a lot of baseball history.

James also talked about the statistics of the game and that they need to be included more on the radio because they make the game more intriguing when you are listening to a boring game.

straussStrauss Talks Cards

Joe Strauss joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on the Roll Home Thursday, and  they discussed Joe’s hatred of Shea stadium. He said he will go to the Mets new stadium when it opens though.

They agreed the Giants might be the worst in the league along with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Joe said the Giants’ strong point is their rotation but their offense is not very good. Barry Zito’s contract was discussed as being one of the worst in history along with the Matt Morris contract, and Joe said that Giants’ GM Brian Sabean will be facing a lot of heat with the lack of success and the over-bearing contracts.

The guys also discussed Adam Wainwright’s ability to be an ace, and Joe was a little skeptical about his durability to go 200+ innings, which is the goal of all number 1 starters. However he said that if Carpenter comes back, he can be the ace and Wainwright could be a very effective #2 pitcher.

Joel Pinerio was also a focal point of the segment, and if he will return Sunday or if they will be cautious and keep him in the minors for one more start. Joe said he had a bullpen session today, and the team will assess his condition and make a decision from that performance.

Strauss said that if the Cardinals want to remain successful they will need to jump start their offense, because this great pitching will not hold up as their ERA is in the 2’s and the league average is in the 4’s. He also believes that the bullpen is very vulnerable and has not yet been exposed.

Bernie threw in the stat of hitting with runners on and with runners in scoring position, and Strauss agreed that they need more hitting in those situations to stay competitive. They also added that the Cardinals have done a good job of not letting the pitchers’ starts go to waste.

Pujols’ competitive edge was also discussed, and they said he has that kind of edge that has been seen in MJ, Tiger Woods and others with how they respond to controversy.

Mulder Nearing Rehab Assignment

Mark Mulder will head for a Minor League rehab assignment if he pitches well in his second extended Spring Training game today down in Jupiter, Florida.

Once a pitcher begins a Minor League rehab he has 30 days before he must be activated, and GM John Mozeliak says he might not need that long.

Mulder has made a total of five starts since June 20th, 2006 because of two shoulder operations.  He'll probably make only one start for Class-A Palm Beach before advancing to pitch at Double-A Springfield and/or Triple-A Memphis.

Pineiro Strikes Out Five In Rehab Start

Joel Piniero allowed two runs, both in the first, and lasted six innings in the Memphis Redbirds 3-2 loss to the Zephyrs at New Orleans last night. He struck out five and walked one batter in his first rehab assignment.

Shortstop Brian Barden went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.  He's hitting .357 in 2008, with eight hits in 23 at bats.  Center fielder and leadoff man Colby Rasmus went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.

Springer Talks About Injury

springerCards reliever Russ Springer said he has inflammation in his ulnar nerve in his right elbow, and it started to irritate him in the cold weather in Springfield. He said that the only way it will calm down is to not throw the ball for 5 or 6 days so they had to put him on the 15 day DL. He is confident that he won't lose arm strength with the days off and will come back healthy.

Russ said he has had it flair up on him before and 2 days later be fine, but this time he thinks the cold weather had an effect and it got more irritated each time he pitched.

Springer said that it causes him to lose some strength on the mound when it starts tingling, and it hurt when he entered the game Friday night.

Springer had surgery on his ulnar nerve in 2003.

Mozeliak: Reyes Controversy Overblown

mozeliakCardinals GM John Mozeliak joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on the Roll Home on Team 1380 Wednesday, and talked about the youth movement beginning with the Cardinals. He said even though there are only 2 rookies on the major league roster, next year we will see a lot more youth coming up from the minors.

Mozeliak said there are as many as 8 potential big league starters on the Memphis squad, and that there will only be 6 free agents next year so the farm system is in the best shape it has been in the past few years. He said that the strength of the farm system is righthanded relievers, with 12 total pitchers with an average velocity of 95 mph.

Mozeliak said that Joel Piniero, Mark Mulder, and Matt Clement could be back in the next 6 weeks, and he talked about Anthony Reyes' situation.

John said that he makes decisions that are best for the organization and for the player. He said that he has a very good, professional relationship with Tony LaRussa, and they have had open dialogue about Anthony Reyes. Mozeliak also said that LaRussa and Dave Duncan's input on the roster is very important.

Knight, Parcells & La Russa in SportsCenter’s “Sunday Conversation”

ESPN will present a unique “Sunday Conversation” this week when three coaching icons – and friends – discuss a variety of topics including their friendships, coaching philosophies and how players have changed over the years, in a pair of segments on the March 30, 10:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. ET SportsCenters.

Bill Parcells and Tony La Russa each sat down with Bob Knight this week in Jupiter, Fla., the Spring Training home of La Russa’s St. Louis Cardinals. Rece Davis moderates the two segments, with separate portions of the Knight / Parcells conversation also running on NFL Live (today 4 p.m. ESPN) and Outside the Lines (Friday 3:30 p.m. ESPN), and part of the Knight / La Russa conversation running on Baseball Tonight (Thursday 4 p.m., ESPN2).

Knight has been to nearly every Spring Training run by La Russa since 1988, and was basketball coach at Army in the late 1960’s when Parcells was linebackers coach there.

From the Knight, Parcells, LaRussa “Sunday Conversation”

“If you had two managers, and one had great knowledge of the game, X's and O's kind of guy, and the other guy had a better personality that was trusting and caring, this guy (the latter) wins all the time. That guy (the former), nobody follows where he goes.” – La Russa, on developing relationships with his players

“We (Parcells and I) used to, every Sunday afternoon in our basement, we'd basically watch the Packers play, because they were on television every Sunday. We'd talk about what coaches did, and there's nobody that I've known in my background in coaching that I saw become a better coach.” – Knight, on Parcells

“It's the peripheral people that are around him (today’s player) now. Basically, (it was) the player and his family when we first started, now its advisors and agents and consultants, and all these other peripheral people that have an influence on the player. And no matter what you try to get across to the player, there are contrary opinions being given to the player from other people.” -- Parcells, on difference between players now, and when he started coaching

“Now, you have a lot of players who are distracted by what their family, their friends, their agents are telling them: ‘Get your numbers, get your money.’ And the coach stands up and talks about team.” – LaRussa, on today’s players

“He was an impossible adversary. He was tough to defeat mentally. We fought it out quite a bit, but enjoyed doing it.” – Parcells, on playing against Knight in pick-up basketball games at West Point

“I've thrown away Giants clothes. I’ve thrown away Jets clothes. I've thrown away Patriots clothes. And now I wonder where the hell my Dolphins clothes are? -- Knight, on his long friendship with Parcells

“I want to retain his friendship, so I will never admit that he's a member of the media.” – LaRussa, on Knight at ESPN becoming a member of the media

Cardinals Talk on Roll Home

reyesBernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker said that if the organization brings Tony LaRussa back like they did, he should be able to pick the 25 players on the roster (as long as his choices aren't outrageous). It seems that the front office wants Anthony Reyes to remain with the Cards and become a reliever, while LaRussa and Dave Duncan would like to send him to Memphis.

They also discussed that John Mozeliak is in a tough spot because he has to earn LaRussa's respect by not just agreeing to everything, and he replaces Walt Jocketty who had tremendous success.

The guys also said that Anthony Reyes hasn't learned to pitch efficiently yet by getting guys to hit grounders instead of trying to strike everyone out because his fastball doesn't have high enough velocity to do that.

LaRussa Says No Decision on Reyes Yet; Excited about Mulder and Carpenter

larussaSt. Louis Cardinals Manager Tony LaRussa joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker of the Roll Home on Team 1380 Wednesday and talked about the Cardinals preparing for opening day.

LaRussa said that the "decision has not been made," on Reyes' status. He said that there are negatives to putting him in the bullpen because he might not be able to warm up fast enough.

LaRussa said that when asked if he would rather go to Memphis and start or relieve in St. Louis, Reyes strongly prefers to stay on the big-league level.

LaRussa continued, "He's been talked about, touted, since Class AA. But he's still a developing pitcher."

The skipper said he is excited about Mark Mulder's progress. Tony said, "He's thrown twice to hitters, and both times has shown good stuff." Mulder says this is the best his arm has felt in three years, and the Cardinals expect him to return soon (May).

Coach was also very upbeat on Chris Carpenter. He said there's a "realistic chance he'll make it back with us before the end of the first half."

LaRussa said Brian Barton will be the fifth guy in the outfield, but that if he hits well he'll get more chances.

The guys also talked about Adam Kennedy and Cesar Izturis among other topics.

Centene Corp. Out of Ball Park Village

OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF ST. LOUIS CARDINALS AND THE CORDISH COMPANY:

The St. Louis Cardinals and The Cordish Company believe that Centene would have been a great addition to Ballpark Village.  We are disappointed that the parties could not come to an agreement, despite months of effort and the best intentions of the City, Centene, and the Ballpark Village team.  Ultimately, the many complexities of Centene’s proposed project in Ballpark Village proved insurmountable.

We will now work immediately with the City and State to finalize all public approvals and commence construction of Ballpark Village.  The Ballpark Village partnership is in the unique position of having its private financing in place, and we are ready, willing, and able to proceed.  Our vision has not changed -- Ballpark Village will be a world-class mixed-use project that will positively transform the City of St. Louis.

shannonCardinals Broadcaster Mike Shannon joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on the Roll Home on Team 1380 on Tuesday from Spring Training in Florida, and he said that if everything falls in place, the Cards will be a force to reckon with.

Shannon said that Brad Thompson has shown the ability to handle the starting role, and that Anthony Reyes has an option left so he thinks Thompson will be the 5th starter.

He said that he thinks the biggest surprise of the spring is Kyle McClellan coming out of nowhere.

Shannon said to never underestimate a Tony LaRussa ballclub because he will have them ready to play, and the guys touched on Mark Mulder, Chris Carpenter, Colby Rasmus, Cesar Izturis, Adam Kennedy, and Adam Wainwright. You can listen to the interview by clicking the link below.

They also talked about Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, Manny Ramirez, and the Cardinals' starting pitching.

Sheehan also made some predictions including that the Cubs will win the NL Central and that the Brewers will take the Wild Card.

Joe Strauss Spring Training Report

straussPost-Dispatch Cardinals beat writer Joe Strauss said that he thinks there is a good chance that the Cardinals will trade Anthony Reyes before the end of camp because it appears that Brad Thompson is the 5th starter.

Strauss said he guarantees that there will be scouts from at least half of MLB teams to watch Reyes pitch tomorrow, but that Reyes probably doesn't have a whole lot of trade value because he has basically been slotted as not better than the Cardinals' 10th best starting pitcher.

Notes from today's action included that Joel Piniero threw 2 innings and that his velocity isn't where it was before his shoulder problem. Joe said he thinks Piniero will be available by the third week of April.

Joe says that Chris Carpenter threw with more velocity than expected today, but that Matt Clement hasn't thrown in the mid-80s yet. He thinks its possible that Mark Mulder could be back before Clement.

Bernie, Randy, and Joe also discussed D'Angelo Jimenez making the club because of Brendan Ryan's injury, and Albert Pujols' contract compared to Miquel Cabrera's new one.

According to the Associated Press, Scott Rolen broke his finger above the knuckle on his right middle finger while taking grounders Sunday, and he might not be available for opening day.

The ball ripped his nail completely off his finger, according to general manager J.P. Ricciardi.

Rolen was to travel to Baltimore on Sunday night to see Dr. Thomas Graham, the hand specialist who treated Toronto catcher Gregg Zaun's injured right thumb last season.

"The fracture is actually not the problem," Ricciardi said. "You can play with a fracture, it's just losing the nail."

Wainwright Extended 4 Years

Deal Includes Club Option through 2013

Financial details according to Derrick Goold of the Post-Dispatch:

wainwrightThe St. Louis Cardinals today announced that they have agreed to terms with pitcher Adam Wainwright on a four-year (2008-11) contract extension that also includes a two-year club option that, if exercised, would carry through 2013.

Cardinals’ Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak made the announcement this afternoon at the Cardinals Spring Training Complex in Jupiter, Fla.

“We are extremely pleased to have a player of Adam’s ilk under contract for up to the next six seasons,” said Mozeliak.  “He represents a key part of the core of our ballclub.  Adam is one of the best young pitchers in baseball and, just as importantly, he is the type of person that embodies what it means to be a Cardinal.”

Wainwright, 26, has posted a 16-13 record with a 3.61 ERA in his two-plus seasons with the Cardinals, earning a team-high 14 wins last year after joining the team’s starting rotation.  The 14 wins were the most ever by a Cardinals pitcher in his initial season as a starter.

Wainwright worked out of the bullpen in 2006 and was on the mound in each of the team’s postseason clinching games in 2006, including the N.L. pennant clinching win over the Mets and the World Championship win over Detroit.
